Lighitng...Any BRIGHT ideas???

So, I need some help deciding on some lighting for our house. We really want our house to have a farmhouse feel- not rustic farmhouse, but classic farmhouse. I think that lighting has a big impact on the feel of a room, so I have been looking and looking trying to find the perfect light for our entryway and a light for above the kitchen table.

The light I have been thinking of for the entry is a "schoolhouse light." These types of lights were used in old schoolhouses. I love that they look old, but not rustic. In fact, I think they are quite classy, myself. Here is what it would look like:

The light I would get is 16"-18" wide and can come in many lengths. Our entryway is about 8 feet wide. Do they say "entry" to you? Not big and grand enough? Or just right for a farmhouse entry???

Now, for the kitchen. I have already chosen 2 pendant lights for above the island. They look like this...

So, what do I do for above the kitchen table? I want it to be more elegant than the island lights, but it has to match with the other lights as well. I am thinking of a drum shade light like this...

or this

Decisions. Decisions. I am up to my eyeballs in decisions, so I would love your input on this one. Let me know what you think!

  1. Hmm. I like the 2nd light up there, with the red stripes. Plus, it's unique and I think kind of immediately sets you at ease, along with how the rest of the house will be.

The one over the table, I like the 2nd one you chose. I think you might get tired of the floral print. But if you're not worried about that, then do the floral. The 2nd one is just more classic, I think, and won't really go out of style too quickly.

    OK, well, fun!

  2. This is funny because I totally understand you right now. After finally choosing everything for our house, I sat and stewed about it all over and over for months. I worried about every single choice, individually, the entire time the house was being built. I looked it all up on the internet and tried to put everything on the screen to see if it would all match well. I spent way too much time. My advice is...choose and then let it go. This is probably impossible, but I wish I had. I still think I should have gone darker on our wood floor--but oh, well. It looks fine and only I worry about it.

As for your lights...I like them all. If it were me, I'd probably choose the first one for the entry (without the red stripe) and the second one over the table (without the floral), but that's just me. I'm more plain and incognito. I'm sure the other choices would look awesome, and you're the one that gets to look at them day in and day out. I actually think the red stripe one and the floral one is more you. You can't go wrong.

I'm no help! But I do understand.

  3. I agree with Holly! You can't go wrong. You have picked some great lights.

Personally I would use the one without the red stripe only because I like to change things a little every now and then and I might want to change it to something without red in it but they are both great choices.

As for the table one, I would go with the 2nd one for the same reasons as above; I don't know how permenate my floral love would be, although the floral is very nice, especially for over the table.

That doesn't sound like it helps much but I wish you luck in your decisions. You are doing an awesome job on this house!

  4. I of course like things that make a little statement, so I would go with the red and the metallic floral. BUT I can definitely see why being a little more basic could be useful later on when styles change. All of the choices are cute so you can't really go WRONG;)

  5. I LOVE LOVE The drum shades. I like the white, but you can't go wrong with either. I'm indifferent on the school. The red is fun.
House searching in Price was painful. I'll have to tell you about it soon.

  6. You've probably already decided by NOW! I haven't been on here in way too long. I had the first type of lights in my kitchen, remember? I LOVE them, but you'd need a pretty large one for an entryway. I'm not sure I Like the drum shade with the other lights you have in the kitchen. I think something just a little more this side of traditional might be better, or cover your shade in a fabric that will give that feel.
